Dr. Mike Ryan, the World Health Organization's director of health emergencies, says that the organization has issued the "highest alert" over Covid-19, but says that it would be "unhelpful" to declare a pandemic when the world is still attempting to contain the virus. The WHO states that most patients only have mild symptoms, and the death rate appears to be between 2% and 5%. By comparison, the seasonal influenza has an average mortality of about 0.1% but is significantly more infectious.

The WHO also stated that the virus seems to disproportionately kill those over 60 years-old, and those with underlying health conditions. Currently, data shows that men are about 1/3 more likely to succumb to the illness.
