Covid-19 - The Latest Updates from Around the World

As of March 2nd, 2020, there have been nearly 90,000 confirmed cases worldwide and over 3,000 deaths due to the Covid-19 (formerly known as 2019-nCoV) coronavirus. Although over 90% of the deaths have occurred in China's Hubei province, 10 other nations including France, the United States of America, Iran, Italy, and South Korea have also reported deaths.

Dr. Mike Ryan, the World Health Organization's director of health emergencies, says that the organization has issued the "highest alert" over Covid-19, but says that it would be "unhelpful" to declare a pandemic when the world is still attempting to contain the virus. The WHO states that most patients only have mild symptoms, and the death rate appears to be between 2% and 5%. By comparison, the seasonal influenza has an average mortality of about 0.1% but is significantly more infectious.

Brief Country-by-Country Summary:

United Kingdom:

The UK has reported 36 confirmed cases while Prime Minister Boris Johnson is to chair an emergency Cobra committee meeting later today. Government sources say that should the outbreak get worse, people could be urged to work from home, schools may be temporarily closed, major public events could be cancelled, and newly-retired doctors and nurses could be asked to return temporarily to help combat the virus.

South Korea:

South Korea is currently the largest Covid-19 outbreak hotspot outside of China, with a total of about 4,212 cases and 26 deaths. 3,081 cases are from Daegu, and 73% of the cases have been linked to the Shincheonji Church. The mayor of the nation's capital city Seoul has urged citizens to work from home if possible and avoid crowded places and public gatherings.

Iran:

Iran is one of the worst affected countries, with 978 infections and 54 deaths reported. However, some media groups say they believe the true number of infections and deaths may be higher than reported. In the capital city Tehran, school and movie theaters have remained closed for a second week.

United States of America:

There are currently at least 62 cases of Covid-19 in the United States of America, and two deaths both in the state of Washington. President Donald J. Trump said that more cases are "likely", but added that America is prepared should the infections escalate.

China:

China has reported over 80,000 confirmed cases of the coronavirus along with 2,912 deaths. Official reports indicate that there are fewer new cases springing up. However, the nation's economy has taken as hit, with factory activity falling at a record rate and the stock market also taking a heavy hit.
