In an official statement, Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi and the nation's government has declared a ban on the sale of alcohol, suspended all liquor licenses effective immediately, and banned consumption of alcohol in public places citing that alcohol has "negative effects on adherence to Covid-19 protocols". The new regulations will be active until "further notice".

On July 31st, Gaborone, the capital of Botswana, was put in a 14 day lockdown after experiencing a rise in Covid-19 cases. As of August 6th, 2020, Botswana's Ministry of Health and Wellness (https://www.gov.bw/) and the African Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (https://africacdc.org/covid-19/) has reported 804 confirmed cases of the Covid-19 coronavirus alongside 2 Covid-19-related deaths in the nation.
