Armenia and Azerbaijan accused each other of violating a humanitarian ceasefire in the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh brokered by Russia just minutes after the truce started at midnight. An Armenia Ministry of Defense spokesperson stated that Azerbaijan started firing artillery shells and rockets for over 2 hours just 4 minutes after midnight while an Azerbaijan official said that Armenia broke the ceasefire just 2 minutes after the truce.

Fighting started last month over the the Nagorno-Karabakh region, which is recognized by the United Nations as part of Azerbaijan, but is run by ethnic Armenians. Although the two nations have had hostilities over the region since the ending of a 6-year war in 1994, the recent fighting has been worst violence since then. Hundreds on either side have been injured or killed.
