The Hallmark holiday is upon us!
While many may choose and desire to let it go by without a second thought - I am taking some time this year to reframe and renew my relationship with good old Valentine’s Day with a bit of Witchy perspective. I don’t consider myself a “love and light” kind of gal. I often seek shadow and celebrate complexities at every turn. So I say this in the least trite way possible - love is some powerful damn magick.
And while the celebration of love on February 14th is 100% overblown and more of a celebration of capitalism - I am deciding to take the day as an opportunity to celebrate my way. The Witch Way. And I invite you to join me in all of the badass and beautiful fun : )
In this issue, we will talk about some of the misconceptions around love spells, and the do’s and don’ts of using or creating them. I will also be offering up a few Witchy ideas of how to celebrate Valentine’s Day this year through an other-worldly lens - whether you are spending time with someone special, friends, or with the most important partner of all...yourself!
Love Spells
When people hear, “I’m a Witch.” The follow up questions at some point will turn to the topic of love, and if Witches can really “put love spells” on others. The two things that many people wish they had control over in modern society is money...and love. So it is no surprise that this comes up when meeting a Witch. However, the answer to this question is a very complex one.
Personally, I don’t believe in concentrating my magick towards “making” anyone else do anything. If one is looking for a love spell, there is probably some resistant energy somewhere in the mix that is preventing a love connection from happening. I think that it is far more productive to dig a little deeper, and figure out where those resistances lie. Usually, your magick would be much more powerful in those cracks and crevices than forcing a situation forward.
For instance, here are some common spell alternatives that I would suggest in place of a “make this person want or love me” spell request:
-Spells/rituals to open communication pathways so that you and the other person in question can be totally on the same page and make an informed decision from there.
-Spells/rituals to clear past negative or stuck energies so that you can move forward with a clean slate after a difficult period of time or argument pattern.
-Spells/rituals to let go of any ties to a past relationship to give a new or current one the opportunity to grow.
-Spells/rituals to inspire creativity and enhance playfulness and the ability to see your partner or self in a new light. I find that creativity and connection with a sense of play is essential to sparking physical chemistry...if that is what you are looking for!
Ultimately - love spells forcing a relationship to work that isn’t proceeding healthfully doesn’t serve anyone.
Another possible situation is when someone doesn’t have any potential partners in mind, but really would like to meet and connect with someone - or many! I tend to think the best course of action is not to conjure love from an unknown other..but rather set the stage in one's own life for love and connection to enter, and recognize it when it comes knocking.
I tend to take issue with the idea that “you have to love yourself entirely before entering right relationship with someone else” - though I think that notion has good intentions...it misses the nuance that loving yourself is a complex and lifelong journey and nobody needs to be perfect to be capable of love or being loved. So, my suggestion with these rituals is not to somehow check off the to-do of “loving yourself fully” to then be deserving of love...but rather start externalizing kind, generous, and even some sexy-to-the-self energy in your day-to-day life if you can. Your consciousness will become aware of the new energy flowing, and begin to recognize it in/ bring it to interactions with others as well - if and when you choose.
I tend to think that my magick can’t, and shouldn’t, be used to force a flow that doesn’t want to go. If something isn’t working, I use my magick to illuminate the blockages, understand them, and let go of what probably isn’t serving me. Then I can flow freely towards the people, opportunities, and experiences that are healthy for me.
