The Rajneesh Movement, later known as the Osho movement, began in the 1970s under the guidance of Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, a spiritual teacher from India. Rajneesh preached a mix of Eastern mysticism & Western philosophy, attracting a large following worldwide. However, beneath the surface of this spiritual movement lay a series of disturbing events that brought it notoriety, particularly during the community's time in Oregon, USA.
The Rise of Rajneeshpuram
In 1981, Rajneesh and his followers, known as Rajneeshees, purchased a 64,000-acre ranch in Wasco County, Oregon. They named it Rajneeshpuram and began to build a massive commune. The goal was to create a utopian city where they could practice their spiritual beliefs freely. However, tensions quickly arose with the local population, leading to bizarre and dangerous actions by the commune's leadership.
The Bioterror Attack
One of the most shocking events associated with the Rajneesh Movement occurred in 1984 when the group attempted to take control of the local government by any means necessary. To prevent residents from voting in local elections, the movement's leaders orchestrated the largest bioterror attack in U.S. history. They deliberately contaminated salad bars in several restaurants with salmonella in The Dalles, Oregon. Over 750 people fell ill, and while no one died, the incident caused widespread panic and fear.
Stockpiling Weapons and Surveillance
The Rajneeshees didn't just stop at bioterrorism. The commune's leaders also built a large stockpile of weapons, including semi-automatic rifles and explosives. They even created an armed security force to protect the commune. Additionally, they carried out extensive surveillance on their own members and local officials. This level of militarization and paranoia was far from the peaceful spiritual ideals the movement claimed to represent.
The Poisoning of Opponents
In their quest for power, Rajneesh's inner circle also plotted to poison local officials and critics. One of the most infamous cases was the attempted poisoning of a U.S. Attorney who was investigating the commune. The commune's leadership also used poison to eliminate internal dissent, making it clear that anyone who opposed them would face dire consequences.
Sexual Exploitation and Abuse
Even more disturbing are the allegations involving underage participants within the cult. Former members have spoken out about how the permissive atmosphere fostered by the leadership led to instances of sexual abuse, including the exploitation of minors. These revelations have cast a long shadow over the Osho movement, revealing a darker, more sinister side to what was presented as a journey toward personal and spiritual freedom.
The Aftermath
In 1985, the commune fell apart when Rajneesh himself was arrested for immigration fraud and deported from the United States. Many of his top aides were also arrested for their roles in the various criminal activities. Rajneesh returned to India, where he continued his teachings until his death in 1990.
Today, the movement still exists under the name Osho, with followers around the world. They focus on Rajneesh's teachings, which emphasize meditation and living a life of love and awareness. However, the dark history of Rajneeshpuram and the crimes committed in the name of spiritual enlightenment remain a chilling reminder of how easily a movement can be corrupted by power.
