October 1865: One of the most chilling incidents occurred when Sarah Matilda Woodruff, the owner's daughter, was brushing her hair in front of a large mirror in the house. According to local legend, she was around 16 years old when she was suddenly struck by an unknown illness. Some say she was poisoned, others believe she died of yellow fever. As she was dying, she stumbled to the mirror, clutching at her throat, and breathed her last breath, leaving handprints on the glass that supposedly can't be removed to this day.
The Ghostly Children: Another eerie aspect of The Myrtles involves two young children, believed to be the children of William Drew Winter, who lived in the house in the late 19th century. These children allegedly died from cholera or possibly from eating poisonous berries. Visitors have reported seeing these children playing on the veranda or around the grounds, often unaware of the living around them.
The Slave Girl, Chloe: Perhaps the most famous ghost is Chloe, a former slave who, according to folklore, had an affair with Judge Woodruff. When she was caught eavesdropping, her punishment was severe; one of her ears was cut off. In revenge or perhaps by accident, she baked a cake with oleander leaves, knowing the family loved her cakes. The cake was meant for the children, but everyone who ate it fell ill. Two of Woodruff’s children died, and Chloe, fearing retribution, fled but was later found hanged, possibly by her own hand or by others.
Modern Times: Over the years, numerous paranormal investigations have been conducted at The Myrtles. Guests and staff have reported:
- The Mirror: Visitors claim to see the imprints of Sarah Matilda's hands, and some have even photographed ghostly figures in the reflection.
- Apparitions: Sightings of Chloe, the children, and other figures wandering the house or appearing in photographs are common.
- Unexplained Phenomena: Doors open and close by themselves, footsteps are heard in empty rooms, and voices or whispers are captured in recordings.
Even today, as Halloween approaches, the Myrtles Plantation continues to be a focal point for those seeking to experience or document the supernatural.
