Pro-market and decentralized industrial policy
I often hear today about industrial policy, strategic autonomy, reindustrialization, and "we need to" this and that. The debates about global integration, globalization, trade, migration, and production are often similar in the E.U. and the USA. Since I am against nationalism and protectionism and distrust centralization and closeness, it is good to hear about decentralizing and freedom-oriented arguments concerning industrial production.
This is why I enjoyed reading the recent article by Robert Tracinski, a neo-classical liberal opinion-maker. His recent article argues that a thriving manufacturing sector is vital for the United States' economic strength and national security. However, achieving this requires embracing globalization, trade, and immigration rather than isolationist policies.
Engaging in global trade networks allows American businesses to access diverse markets, driving innovation and growth. By exporting goods and services worldwide, the U.S. can expand its economic reach and create opportunities for domestic manufacturers. Moreover, open trade fosters competition, incentivizing companies to improve efficiency and quality.
Welcoming immigrants brings diverse talent and skills to the U.S. workforce, particularly in high-demand sectors like manufacturing. Historically, immigrants have played a crucial role in fueling American innovation and entrepreneurship. The U.S. can address labor shortages and drive productivity in critical industries by attracting skilled workers and entrepreneurs.
Embracing openness fosters a culture of innovation and collaboration. American businesses can tap into international expertise, technology, and resources by connecting with global partners. This exchange of ideas and knowledge accelerates technological advancement and enhances the competitiveness of U.S. industries.
Therefore, embracing globalization, trade, immigration, and openness is essential for unlocking America's economic potential. By leveraging the benefits of a connected world, the U.S. can strengthen its manufacturing sector, drive innovation, and maintain its position as a global leader in the 21st-century economy. The same goes for the E.U. as well.
In the current climate of the USA, there's a growing concern over political violence. Events like the 2020 riots and the 2021 Capitol assault have heightened worries, with attacks and threats against public officials becoming more frequent. Additionally, a worrying number of individuals see violence as an acceptable way to settle political disputes.
Historically, far-right groups have been the main perpetrators of lethal political violence. However, there's a new trend emerging where individuals are self-radicalizing, possibly due to societal issues like inequality and mental health challenges.
Despite these challenges, there are some positive signs. The peaceful 2022 midterm elections and increased law enforcement efforts against extremist groups suggest that the threat of political violence may be diminishing.
It's crucial for continued vigilance, responsible rhetoric from political leaders, and addressing underlying societal issues to prevent further violence. President Biden's condemnation of political violence contrasts former President Trump's comments, indicating a more practical approach to discouraging such behavior.
The Supreme Court has temporarily halted a Texas law empowering state authorities to arrest and deport migrants seeking asylum in the United States. The law, Senate Bill 4 (SB4), passed by the GOP-led Legislature, challenges the traditional federal domain over immigration enforcement by allowing Texas law enforcement to arrest migrants suspected of entering the state illegally.
The Biden administration and civil and immigrant rights groups have opposed the law, leading to a legal battle. Initially blocked by a federal judge, the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the law, prompting the administration to seek Supreme Court intervention.
