There is a growing resentment towards Syrian refugees in Lebanon and Turkey, despite receiving significant funding from the European Union (EU) to support them. Both countries have been stoking anti-refugee sentiments, with political leaders using the promise of expelling refugees to align themselves with public opinion.
Although normalization efforts suggest that Syria has regained stability, Syrians still face dangers from the government and militant groups. Turkey has imposed harsh restrictions on Syrians, including expelling those not registered and limiting residency in specific neighborhoods. Border guards have been accused of torture and killings. In Lebanon, there have been mass deportations, arbitrary detentions, and deportation of unregistered or expired refugees. The dire economic situation in Lebanon exacerbates the anti-refugee sentiment.
Despite EU and US funding, many refugees live in extreme poverty and lack access to education. The situation in Syria remains unsafe, with the government collecting information on refugees and using surveillance technology. The upcoming Brussels VII Conference calls for the EU to reassess its funding and support for Lebanon and Turkey. Instead of funding forced returns and human rights abuses, the EU should increase resources for education, healthcare, housing, and employment in host countries to alleviate economic stressors and improve conditions. Failing to address the broken asylum agreements endangers millions of refugees and may lead to a new wave of migration to Europe under treacherous conditions.
