The horrors of national(ist) conservatism

The ideology of National Conservatism is about a connection to Meir Kahane, a controversial figure in Jewish politics. Meir Kahane, a Brooklyn-born Orthodox Jew, founded the Jewish Defense League in the US and later set up the Israeli political party called Kach. He was known for his racist and anti-democratic views and was assassinated in 1990.

Yoram Hazony, a young Israeli political philosopher, wrote an article expressing his admiration for Kahane and his influence on him and others. Hazony is now a prominent figure in the National Conservatism movement.

Kahane advocates non-state violence and has extreme views on Arabs in Israel. Kahane believed that Jews should occupy the entire land of Greater Israel and that Arabs could only stay if they converted to Judaism or gave up their citizenship rights. His rhetoric incited violence, and one of his party members, Baruch Goldstein, committed a massacre of Palestinians in 1994. National Conservatism, espoused by Hazony and others, shares some political similarities with fascism, although it rejects street violence.

National Conservative "Statement of Principles" was published by the Edmund Burke Foundation and signed by several influential figures, including Peter Thiel and Mark Meadows. The principles advocate for the nation-state as the basis for representation and identification, reject globalism and international institutions, emphasize the importance of religion and traditional family values, and call for more restrictive immigration policies.

The article also discusses the funding of the Edmund Burke Foundation, with significant contributions from the Jewish Philosophy Fund and the Thomas D. Klingenstein Fund, among others. Hazony's rhetoric at a National Conservatism conference is criticized for being intellectually vacuous and lacking substance.

Concerns about the National Conservatism movement and its ideology, suggesting that it may have fascist tendencies and noting the controversial figures associated with it, such as Meir Kahane.
