Thousands of South Sudanese refugees are returning to their war-torn country from Sudan, facing dire conditions and limited support. Around 70,000 civilians have fled to South Sudan due to ongoing fighting in Sudan. Still, upon arrival in South Sudan, they encounter a lack of aid, limited transportation options, and minimal assistance to rebuild their lives.

South Sudan was already experiencing high levels of need due to climate shocks and violence, and the situation is expected to worsen as more civilians flee Sudan. Humanitarian organizations and the government have set up transit centers and provided some aid, but they lack the necessary resources to help everyone in need. Returnees face challenges in border towns such as Renk and Paloch, where limited support and soaring food prices are causing additional difficulties.

The government hesitates to establish permanent camps and instead aims to assist people in resettling and becoming self-reliant. However, returnees report a lack of support and express concerns about finding employment and meeting basic needs. Political concerns also arise as the government may try to control where people return to, potentially altering demographics in certain areas. Despite the challenges, many returnees express relief at being back in South Sudan, despite the difficult circumstances, and call for the government to take responsibility for supporting their return.
