Russian protestors who oppose Putin's war in Ukraine have shown great courage despite facing arrests and human rights abuses. The circumstances surrounding the war and protests are similar to the Mexican-American War of the 1840s when the United States unjustly invaded Mexico.
Both wars involved powerful nations attacking weaker neighbors, using pretenses to justify their actions. The United States aimed to annex Mexican territory, while Russia aimed to annex self-proclaimed republics in Ukraine. Although the United States succeeded in its conquest, Russia failed to capture Kyiv and could not claim the contested territory legitimately.
Both wars of conquest are morally reprehensible, and the concept of civil disobedience, as Henry David Thoreau advocates, has played a role in opposing such acts. The parallel between these wars raises questions about the status of territories annexed by the United States, highlighting the deep wrongs inflicted by conquest. Today, there are recognized standards of governance, human rights, and international law, making conquest unacceptable behavior.
The dismantling of colonialism and the domestication of states has led to a focus on pursuing national interests and cultural survival through nonviolent means. Minority rights matter and countries should work to make their territories inclusive for all nationalities. Looking forward and striving for greatness through peace and cooperation rather than dwelling on past conquests and divisions is essential.
