On Monday, the UN Security Council will hold a briefing and closed consultations on the situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and the work of the UN Organization Stabilization Mission in the DRC (MONUSCO).

The briefing will be given by Assistant Secretary-General for African Affairs Martha Pobee, who will discuss recent developments in the DRC, including the upcoming general elections scheduled for December. Pobee is expected to address concerns about narrowing civic space and the integrity of state institutions in the country. She may also mention the security situation in eastern DRC, particularly the activities of armed groups such as the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) and the M23 Movement.

The briefing will also touch upon regional initiatives and coordination efforts to address the security challenges in the region. Council members will likely support these initiatives and emphasize the importance of peaceful, transparent, and credible elections in the DRC. The negotiations for extending the DRC sanctions regime and the mandate of the Group of Experts assisting the Sanctions Committee are also underway.

Despite being a country full of natural minerals and resources, Congo is still one of the world's poorest and most unsafe countries.
