India's economic growth prospects and its potential to surpass China as the world's leading economy. While India's population is projected to surpass China's, several factors suggest India may face challenges in achieving China's level of economic success.
One of the reasons for optimism about India's economic potential is its current economic outlook, which is similar to China's at the beginning of its rapid economic rise in 2000. However, there are significant differences between the two countries. China had already laid the foundation for economic growth by revamping its labor force, with a high literacy rate and significant female labor force participation. In contrast, India has lower literacy rates and a much lower female labor force participation rate. These factors make it unlikely for India to match or surpass China's demographic dividend.
Another challenge for India is its demographic shift. While China now faces an aging population due to its previous one-child policy, India's population is younger and still growing. However, India's working-age population is projected to see only a modest increase by 2030 and is expected to decline after 2050. Additionally, India needs to move its workforce out of agriculture faster, as a significant portion of its workforce is still employed in this sector compared to China.
Furthermore, China's economic rise benefited from unique global dynamics, such as its near-monopoly on low-wage production and favorable conditions for global supply chains. These dynamics may not be replicable for India and other countries seeking rapid economic growth. Additionally, technological advancements could impact India's services sector, which has significantly contributed to its economy.
India can still achieve significant economic growth and improve the lives of its people by implementing the correct set of policies, as countries like South Korea have done. However, India must focus on quality universal education, boosting women's employment, and transitioning its labor force to more productive sectors. These pillars are crucial for India to move out of China's economic shadow and capitalize on the demographic dividend it possesses.
Overall, while India's population growth and economic potential are noteworthy, several challenges and areas of improvement need to be addressed for India to achieve sustained and significant economic growth on par with China.
