Going Indie - new voting behaviours in the USA

In the 2022 midterms, independent voters significantly influenced election outcomes, defying the expectations of pollsters and pundits. Historically, independents swung between the two main parties in previous elections.

However, in 2022, while the sitting president was a Democrat, they leaned towards Democrats. Independent voters represented 31% of the total voters. In key Senate races, they strongly favored Democrats: by 20% in Pennsylvania, 11% in Georgia, and 16% in Arizona.

Many analysts attributed the surprising tilt towards Democrats to the independent voters' distrust of Republicans rather than concerns about inflation or the economy. The shift challenges the traditional American political notion of a two-party system. Critics often label independents as "shadow partisans" or mere "leaners" toward one party, suggesting they aren't truly independent. However, this perspective may be due to a two-party bias inherent in U.S. politics.

Currently, 42% of Americans identify as independents, a stark rise from 20% during 1940-1960. The decision to become independent is significant in today's polarized times. Arizona Senator Kyrsten Sinema, for instance, switched from Democrat to Independent in December 2022, highlighting the partisanship and rigidity of national parties.

Research indicates that independent voters have volatile party loyalties. They often switch voting patterns, choosing candidates based on specific issues or circumstances rather than party loyalty. Many states restrict independents' voting rights, especially in primaries. The trend suggests that for independents, choices are influenced more by candidates, issues, and the broader socio-political environment than party loyalty.

The unpredictable nature of independent voters makes understanding their patterns crucial for future political strategies.
