Just nine days before announcing his presidential bid, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed SB266 to weaken left-leaning ideas and initiatives at state universities. The law prohibits using "diversity, equity, and inclusion" (DEI) funds from state or federal sources.

Conservatives argue that DEI programs are a guise for promoting social justice causes. The bill is part of a broader conservative attack on what they perceive as an elite that seeks to impose its values on the working and middle classes. The push to control universities is part of a larger conservative counter-revolution in higher education across many red states.

These efforts include laws against "divisive concepts," attempts to weaken or end tenure, and increased government control over curricula. Critics argue that such interventions compromise academic freedom and undermine the independence of universities. Supporters of these measures, led by right-wing activist Christopher Rufo, claim that universities have become politically correct and oppressive, necessitating a conservative siege on these institutions.

However, data suggests that left-wing dominance on Florida campuses is exaggerated, and spending on DEI initiatives is minimal in proportion to overall university budgets. While there are concerns about a lack of viewpoint diversity and ideological screening in hiring and promotion processes, endorsing a conservative counter-revolution that undermines liberal democratic norms is seen as a distraction and a threat to universities' work and success.
