AI poses significant risks to the LGBTQI+ community, as it can facilitate discrimination and human rights violations. Systems claiming to identify LGBTQI+ individuals based on facial features, voice, and other factors are inaccurate and fail transgender and intersex people.
In the hands of oppressive governments, AI can be used to monitor and persecute LGBTQI+ individuals, stifling their freedom and privacy. Using biased data sets reinforces stereotypes and leads to harmful consequences, such as misgendering and invasive security checks. AI algorithms also struggle to distinguish between harmful and ordinary speech, resulting in censorship and erasure of LGBTQI+ identities.
Conventional legal tactics may not effectively combat these dangers, so private businesses must take responsibility by involving the LGBTQI+ community in AI system design, revoking discriminatory technologies, and resisting state-sponsored homophobia.
Ethical guidelines should be replaced with human rights-based policies and legal measures, including a ban on AI technologies claiming to identify sexual orientation and gender identity. Different approaches are needed to address AI's unintentional and intentional discriminatory use.
