  1. Jens Galschiøt, a Danish artist, resurrected his famous "Pillar of Shame" sculpture in Berlin to memorialize the 1989 Tiananmen massacre. The sculpture stood for nearly 25 years at Hong Kong University until Chinese authorities ordered its removal in 2021 as part of the crackdown on the island's pro-democracy movement.

  2. Inspired by Tiananmen's iconic Tank Man photo, the sculpture was erected in Hong Kong before the British handover in 1997. Galschiøt unveiled a copy of the confiscated original before POLITICO's parent company Axel Springer headquarters in Berlin.

  3. Germany faces political infighting within its ruling coalition as one of the governing parties blocks previously agreed on climate legislation. The law aims to ban installing or replacing gas or petroleum-powered heating in homes and promote electrical heat pumps instead.

  4. The law, which was agreed in principle by the coalition of the Social Democrats, the Greens, and the Free Democrats, has faced opposition from households fearing additional costs. The Free Democrats have decided to block the law, testing the limits of the coalition.

  5. The disagreement highlights the power struggle between the pro-business Free Democrats and the Green Party, potentially jeopardizing the coalition's stability.

  6. Germany's indecisiveness and internal divisions have been the subject of criticism in Brussels. The country's slow decision-making process often delays reaching a consensus on EU-level decisions.

  7. In another development, conservative and liberal MEPs in the agriculture committee rejected new EU legislation to reverse biodiversity loss, known as the Nature Restoration Regulation. The opposition stems from concerns that the legislation may take land away from farmers and undermine food security.

  8. Commissioner Ylva Johansson criticized Greece for marooning migrants in the Aegean Sea, describing it as a deportation rather than a pushback. She called for an independent investigation into the incident.

  9. Johansson will update EU member countries on Brussels' plans for the new migration pact, expressing optimism that an agreement can be reached on all 11 files before the end of the legislative mandate.

  10. The EU has sent Ukraine 220,000 rounds of ammunition, putting it on track to dispatching 1 million shells within 12 months. However, questions remain about whether EU countries can maintain this pace.

  11. Europe is conducting a charm offensive in Latin America as part of its broader geopolitical competition with Russia and China. U.K. Foreign Secretary James Cleverly is visiting Brazil to strengthen diplomatic ties.

  12. The Qatargate investigation into alleged corruption has consequences for Belgian diplomatic relations with countries implicated in the scandal, such as Morocco.

  13. The Atlantic Group, consisting of EU member countries with Atlantic coastlines, discussed the challenges of enlargement, institutional governance, budget impact, and policy reform.

  14. Romanian MEP Siegfried Mureșan has been appointed the general rapporteur for the 2024 budget by the European Parliament's Committee on Budgets. He aims to secure additional funds to support Ukraine.

  15. Podemos, the Spanish left-wing party, is facing a reckoning in local elections, marking a decade since it disrupted Spain's two-party politics.
