The Al Dhafra camel beauty contests involve tens of thousands of camels from across the Arabian Peninsula and focus on the purebred camels from the Asayel and Majaheem lineages. A celebration of this most beloved of Bedouin animals are multi-million-dirham sales of camels that are executed in quiet private deals and open auctions held along the Shari’a al Malyoon.
Visiting this camel beauty contest is giving me a glimpse into the soul of the Bedouin, which for them the camel was everything. The event is located on the high dunes outside the desert city of Madinat Zayed, Abu Dhabi. The Bedouin arrive in high specs SUVs, followed up with numbers of tanker trucks carrying water tanks and black camels originally from Saudi Arabia which are the most prized. Hundreds of millions of dollars changing hands in camels bought and sold during the event. Enjoy!
Thank you for traveling with me!
This is part of my ongoing Travel Visualclips, where I shared a glimpse of my travel visuals and thought. Each series features a paragraph of the history of the place and a paragraph of my thought. Accompanied by no more than fifteen images, each series is intended to give readers the umami of travel.
