UplandWealthBuilding - The how not to do it!

By VaKnow22 | VaKnow22/crypto | 27 Apr 2022

Hey guys, it's been a little while since I posted on publish0x, but I saw this competition (#UplandWealthBuilding) and had to have a go!

So as ever - definitely NOT financial advice, trust me it would be a bad move to do what I did!

Here goes!

So I started on Upland when I first became interested in crypto. I heard of this game that was play2earn. How cool is that I thought? So I made an account - RangerVano if you're interested in seeing how super successful I have become (sarcasm!).

My first mistake is I didn't follow a referral link, which meant I lost out on some free UPX (in-game currency), honestly, I suck at Upland. Despite my ineptitude in the game, I do love it. I log on every day to see how my empire is doing, and every day is a little disappointing. However, Upland is the long game, you're not going to start earning enough money to quit your job overnight. So I'm patient.

I'm actually impatient. I use my UPX to buy a property and then I'm cashless with one property in Staten Island to my name. There was my second mistake. Start in Detroit, or somewhere you can afford a property. I'm British, I don't know Detroit, but I've heard of the Staten Island ferry, so I hopped on board and bought an overpriced property.

I then, due to impatience, lament the fact that I'm not making money hand over fist, so I buy some UPX with real money. I then spend all of that UPX really quickly in Detroit. I now have a new problem, I've spent the best part of $20, I have a few properties in Detroit and one in New York and I'm out of cash again. The UPX I make out of my properties means I'll have enough money to buy another property on my 55th birthday. I'm impatient.

So, I go on a treasure hunt. I spend some money to enter the hunt. Gotta spend money to make money. Third mistake right here! I spend my money on hunts and have no clue what I'm doing. You need to use Sends to travel across the city towards the treasure. I quickly use all of the sends and find out you have to wait 24 hours before they regenerate. In the meantime, my explorer is floating around Cleveland. That's right, I wanted to see what Cleveland was like so spent money on a train fare (mistake four!?).

I'm persistent if nothing else, so the next day I log in again and collect my earnings, it isn't much. And I enter a treasure hunt. This time I've travelled around the city collecting Sends first. I've got this. I blindly enter the hunt and realise there's a bit of an art to it. Before I can realise what I've done, I've used all 11 sends, because in my haste I didn't realise the little arrows actually gave you an idea of how far away the treasure was - mistake 5.

Go to bed, leave it for 24 hours. Log back in. I collect the sends, but my problem is that I haven't even enough cash to enter the hunt. Gotta spend money to make money I tell myself and I buy more UPX. I realise I can buy two houses in Detroit for that. I do that and then return to the hunt. I've got about 8 properties at this point and I've paid real cash for 7 of them. I jump on the train to Cleveland and enter the hunt. EXCEPT, I stupidly spent the last of my money on the train journey. I decide not to spend any more real money, I'll just leave the game for a week or so. Collect some earnings, then hunt.

About 5 days later I log back in and collect my earnings. My explorer is floating around Cleveland. I pay 50UPX for the treasure hunt and spend about 60UPX on sending my explorer places. But I do it! I find the treasure! There's a big animation that says I've found it and there's a big pirate's treasure chest. I click to open that and am awarded 120UPX. Gosh darn, I say, or something a little more explicit. I'm up 10 UPX. I made more earnings doing nothing. So I do that some more. Check in every once and a while and collect my earnings. It isn't much.

I'm super impatient, so I visit every now and then and buy UPX with cash. I trick myself into believing I'm an entrepreneur. I'm not, I'm haemorrhaging cash. However, over a few weeks, I spend *ahem*cough* real cash and buy loads of properties. I currently have 39 properties and am worth 175000 UPX.

Now, I know what you are thinking, that I'm not very good at this. But give me a second to explain. Most of the properties I've bought I can't sell yet, I have to own them for a certain amount of time. But when I can sell them, I can sell them for real fiat money. Aaaannndd by then, all the properties will have gone up in price. So I'm going to finally be rich enough to quit my.... habit of buying cheap coffee and buy the more expensive brand.
