Upland Journey Log #1

This past week I began playing the game Upland. I had seen it being advertised by Brave multiple times and finally caved and decided to check it out. The game did not disappoint. I was immediately entranced by the distinctiveness of the game compared to other market games I had played in the past. My start was a little slow because I like to play games F2P, so my early game plan consisted of begging more experienced players in the New Players channel of the Upland discord.

I began playing the game Thursday night, May 6, so technically it has been over a week. I didn't do much in the game that night, I followed the tutorial choosing my starter city as Brooklyn, bought my first FSA,1161Saint Marks Ave, and pretty much after that logged off of the game. The next day, I began watching tutorials. I found out about the discord and joined it. Let me say first, WHAT A COMMUNITY! There are plenty of helpful players willing to teach noobs like myself the basics of the game. I highly recommend joining the discord if you haven't already, the invite link should be in resources. The second thing I learned upon entering the discord was that Staten Island was being released that day, and that preopening I should buy a train ticket and head over there. I did although with much difficulty, because apparently if you visit the wrong property that's RIGHT next to the station you won't reach it. After the bus mishap, all that was left to do was wait, and wait I did until twelve (for me) when all hell broke loose. As soon as Staten Island opened up I admit I was a bit overwhelmed. I still wasn't used to the Upland economy as wells as sends so I thought that the FSA closest to me was the one I should buy. So I did that, I purchased 125 Old Town Road for 4,599 UPX and took my horse to it. Experienced players are probably laughing at that statement, so let me explain why that was a mistake to my fellow noobs. For your starting UPX, you only get a small amount to buy properties with, AND I BASICALLY BLEW ALL OF IT ON ONE PROPERTY! After conferring with experienced discord players we came to the consensus that: yup, I was an idiot (Dame da ne). A few people who have been very instrumental to my growth in this game (CaFe MogadoR and Grauwulf) basically told me that I should buy cheaper properties next time, so after a few visits from them, that's what I did, I bought 72 N railroad ave for the sweet price of 720 UPX. The next days consisted of a ton of begging for visitors, now I know begging, I'm from Detroit and I can confidently say that ANY homeless person on ANY street corner can't hold a candle to my begging, thanks to the discord members for not having any flip outs you guys are real chillas. On Tuesday, I finally got my Uplander status (thanks to CaFe MogadoR, Grauwulf, Plasty, the Tempest, Digital Zen, and many others) the world was at my fingertips! I could do whatever I wanted! So, I posted 1161 Saint Marks ave for an exorbitant price and then after a while was confused, hmmmmmmm why was no one buying my super fairly priced property? I lowered it to compete with properties of the exact size and still, no fish would bite. Eventually, my guardian angel Sadisty came asking for FSAs for three times price, so I said sounds like a deal, and finally got my hands on some of that good liquid cash. I had learned from my experience at the beginning of Staten and decided to hold the liquid until the full release of Staten Island on Thursday.

On Thursday, I admit I came late to the show and got a bit panicky. I looked at my reflection in my computer monitor whispered diamond hands, and began looking for properties. After my extremely extensive research, basically Grauwulf just telling me what I should do, I knew that I should look for collection props because they sell higher, I found a relatively cheap Tompskinville prop and sold it for 20k UPX for a profit of 16k UPX, looking back on it now I could've sold it for 30k UPX and it still would've sold like hotcakes, but learning experience I guess? I then bought three properties in Tompskinville, accidentally bought a Stapleton property (I know dumb right), freaked out, then realized I didn't need to commit seppuku because, THANK GOD, Stapleton was also a collector set. After that debacle, I finished the Tompskinville set and began looking for Stapleton props, I bought my second Stapleton prop, and then once again disaster struck, I bought a Park Hill prop instead of a Stapleton property (I need a transaction reviewer or something), luckily, it didn't affect me too much because I still had enough liquid to buy the properties I wanted, but I was pretty close to throwing my computer out of my window. I finished out the day of spending by buying 100 N railroad ave, in an attempt to get king of the street, but forgot about my UPX being low (that's a thing apparently), so now I'm basically a sitting duck, I am now getting some decent cash flow from rent but, I can't sell my properties until next week.

Next week I plan to probably sell 125 old town road and look out for steals. I'm going to try to practice some flipping, but beyond that I don't know what else I should do, if you have any ideas feel free to let me know in the comments. See you next week!
