Sometimes, I wonder what the world would be like without social media.

Not because I don't like it.

Because I do.

I browse when I'm bored, I post things for my friends, watch some random video and get stuck on it for a really long time.

But imagine if nothing of that ever became possible.

We could still know what our friends are up to but we wouldn't know everything about them all the time.

If one went on vacation, he/she would tell us after coming back home.

If one had an amazing day, he/she would tell us instead of putting it on display.

And if one had a bad day, he/she would not be forced to pretend everything was all right.

That's the main problem caused by social media.

It allowed us to see into the lives of others but didn't let us see the reality of their lives.

We see only the best of their photo, holiday, achievement and relationship experiences.

Afterwards, we compare it with our boring Tuesday and ask ourselves why our life isn't as exciting.

That's not always jealousy.

Sometimes it's just comparison playing out in silence.

Without social media, I believe we'd miss a lot of things.

We wouldn't get introduced to new tunes as soon.

Artists would struggle finding an audience.

Staying in touch with somebody who lives far would be much more difficult.

The fact is that there are people I would never get to know without the Internet.

So I don't believe the world would be necessarily better without it.

It would be different.

Perhaps we would connect to hundreds of people but to very few that are around us.

We'd have fewer online memories and many that would reside solely in our minds.

And perhaps we wouldn't spend so much time thinking about how the rest of the world perceives us.

I'm not sure it would make us happier.

But I know for sure that there would be fewer opportunities to compare our normal everyday life to other people's highlight reels.

I don't know if this alone would transform us in a way we would ever think about.

Perhaps the point of the question is not whether the Internet improved our lives or ruined them.
