The Future of AI Might Be Invisible

In contemplating the future of artificial intelligence, one may picture quite an obvious thing  robots roaming around, chatty machines, and all those intelligent assistants which will do everything for you. However, it may be that the future of AI will be a lot more subtle than that.

There is already a great number of applications in which artificial intelligence functions without being noticed by the user. It will be able to recommend videos to watch, block spam emails, help with translating, improving photos, recognizing voices, analyzing software requests. And the point is that in most cases we are not actually aware of the presence of the algorithm.

It may happen even more often.

The development will not mean opening a separate app which will perform AI-related functions but will consist in integrating AI into the already existing apps.

And what is very interesting is that the better AI will do its job, the less attention it will draw to itself.

Technologies succeed when they stop seeming to be technologies.

This does not mean that AI will vanish from our world. There will still be chatbots, AI assistants, creative applications, robots, and numerous gadgets and products which are primarily based on AI. However, some of the most significant transformations are likely to occur under the hood.

Consider the scenario when you utilize some service, for instance, a map that forecasts traffic, a camera that enhances your picture automatically, or a piece of software that recognizes some problem in advance. Most probably, you will not say, "The AI just did it." Instead, you will be saying, "That was useful."

This is an entirely different type of technological revolution.

This implies that evaluating AI only according to demonstrations may become deceptive. An advanced system can seem quite unimpressive at the first glance. Its real value may be in minor savings of time, minimizing errors, supporting decision-making, or improving usability of complex services.

Perhaps, the future of AI will not consist in constant proving of its intelligence through various demonstration.

Perhaps, the future of AI will be such that we will not see intelligence behind its technologies anymore
