Sometimes I think that technology is making people forget how to do things themselves.
Of course, I do not mean complex things, but those small things that are usually done daily by oneself.
No one remembers phone numbers since they are saved in our phones; no one knows any directions as Google Maps will give them. No one calculates simple actions anymore since all they need to do is just to turn on the calculator.
In my opinion, there is nothing bad about the use of the device to make one's life easier.
However, the use of technology and reliance on it are two different matters.
If I use a calculator all the time, I may find it difficult to do some simple calculations without it. The same happens when I rely only on GPS and lose a feeling of the place where I am.
The same thing happens when I use the search engine or AI to get the answer to my question.
What is important, is that we hardly ever pay attention to this issue.
We simply adapt to the easier way.
However, I do not think that technology is limiting our ability in all cases. Actually, it has allowed people to gain knowledge that could be hard to acquire before. We can learn languages, fix items, learn complex material, communicate with people all over the world, and find necessary information in seconds.
This becomes a problem when convenience substitutes the skill altogether.
It is somehow good to know how to move without a map, to store the information in your mind, to solve problems without immediately looking for an answer, or just to be comfortable with some confusion.
All these skills may seem tiny, but they grant us freedom.
Perhaps, the aim should not be to stop using technology. It does not make much sense anyway. Rather, the approach I would suggest is to preserve some elementary skills despite technology can perform them.
Use the GPS but know where you are going.
Use the calculator but be able to calculate roughly.
Use the AI but come up with an answer on your own.
Technology must make us more capable and not make us incapable without it.
