What is BUSD? Binance US Dollar.

By vanassen.eth | understandingadoption | 31 Jan 2023

Binance USD (BUSD) is a stablecoin pegged 1:1 to the US dollar. It was created to provide a reliable and stable digital currency that can be easily used in various applications and as a store of value. BUSD is issued by Paxos Trust Company and Binance, and is fully backed by US dollars held in reserve.

Benefits of using BUSD include lower volatility compared to other cryptocurrencies, ease of conversion to and from US dollars, and wider acceptance in various platforms and dApps. BUSD is also subject to regular auditing and regulatory oversight, adding to its credibility and stability.

BUSD can be used for various purposes, including as a stable and secure means of payment, as collateral for loans, and as a trading pair on cryptocurrency exchanges. It can be easily bought, sold, and traded on the Binance platform and other supported exchanges.

BUSD reserves are held by Paxos Trust Company, a regulated financial institution. BUSD is issued by Paxos in partnership with Binance, and is fully backed by US dollars held in reserve by Paxos. The reserve is regularly audited to ensure that the amount of BUSD in circulation is fully backed by the US dollars held in reserve. This provides stability and confidence in the value of BUSD, as it is pegged 1:1 to the US dollar.

BUSD is supported on multiple blockchain platforms, including:

  • Ethereum (ERC-20 standard)
  • Binance Smart Chain (BEP-20 standard)
  • Polygon
  • Avalanche

This allows for BUSD to be used in a variety of decentralized applications (dApps) and decentralized finance (DeFi) platforms built on these chains, as well as facilitating easy transfer and exchange with other cryptocurrencies.

This is another example of how Binance has created a private sector for cryptocurrency ecosystems.

Binance Holdings Inc. has been flagged in the past for missing the collateral neccessary to maintain the BUSD peg; missing up to a $1b USD at times.

Binance cites operational errors/ delays, and claims to have since resolved the discrepancies.

You can download Binance or Binance.US to purchase BUSD, or use a DEX on the above mentioned chains. (UniSwap, Pancakeswap).
