Bear market??? The $AR token, native currency of the Arweave network, is up close to 40% on the 7 day period.
What is Arweave? And what value does it offer the world that would lead it to receive a bull market pump in the worst of bear markets?
- In the last 20 years, 100+ open access scientific journals have disappeared off the web, and many more are set to follow.
- Out of the hyperlinks archived in the U.S. Supreme Court Opinions, and Harvard Law Review Journal ( plus other journals), approximately 50% and 70%, respectively, do not link to the same originally cited information.
- 95% of the data that was originally online has disappeared, according to Arcast.
- 30% of weblinks break within 2 years.
Arweave has been busy creating the permaweb- a permanent, decentralized, and community online storage cloud. Although the Arweave project has been in existence since 2017, it's been the last year and a half the Arweave has shown its potential; the ecosystem grew 86% from Q1 2021-Q2 2022; its highest growth period saw 30 apps added in 3 months (10-21-1/22). The team also added 40k Twitter followers over the same year.

Rather than a typical linear blockchain, Arweave uses a network called a "blockweave," (created specifically for Arweave.) Rather than conncecting one block of data to another, the blockweave is essentially a set of blocks, linking to a previous sets of blocks.
This chart illustrates the growth of Arweave's blockweave from Q1 2021-Q2 2022.
So, how does Arweave create a serverless web with forever storage? Well, for those with a simple knowledge of syntax can check out this medium article to understand how the Arweave protocol uses Proof of Access mining as a decentralized/ incentivized consensus mechanism without competing to use massive amounts of energy like the PoW consensus.
For the rest of us, the Arweave Network uses a dapp called ArDrive. ArDrive allows users to login, connect their ArConnect Wallet, and proceed to use Arweave tokens to store their data on in the ArDrive server permanently, through the use of the Proof of Access mining mechanism, which incentivizes miners to share and maintain ArDrive's database.
At the moment, because of Arweave's fallen price, ArDrive space is extremely cheap, about .25 AR for a GB, which could store thousands of Word Docs. That means that most of us could permanently archive all of our Publish0x articles to the permaweb for less than one AR (currently trading hands at $12.12). Here is AdDrive's calculator to determine storage space pricing.
Arweave's cost for storage in AdDrive is paid one time and upfront; one of Arweave's qualities that make it a top choice for data storage. Competitor BitTorrent charges 23 BTT per month (not much right now either) per GB, while Filecoin charges far less than a penny for a GB of storage per year. Filcoin storage updated price sheet can be found here.
Whichever the project, the concept is the same, and is more important than ever at the moment; it is the anti-thesis to long term censorship.
