4: The Real Alpha
Written by Brianna West
Mad Dog Nova
Under the cover of forest, we formed a loose square around the vampire, whose glowing pale eyes and deathly white skin caught stray beams of moonlight.
Without a fifth packmate, we couldn’t obtain the optimal pack circle, but it would do.
To anyone else, our target looked like a lost teenager on an excursion through the woods, outfitted the way he was in nothing but classic youth-inspired attire — a chic, name-brand top and pair of faded denims. It was likely how he coaxed the young ones to trust him.
And it was all the more reason to despise his immortal youth versus our max two to three hundred years, where we slowly aged but aged nonetheless.
Our mark had gotten a head start, primarily because Danny-Boy and Light Foot argued about what position they’d take in the formation. No surprise their bet was to blame for the late start.
If Claire were here, they’d be better behaved.
As shameful as it was to say as an alpha, our fifth and final packmate was the real authority in our group. She was presently away, helping another pack with a difficult mark. But when she returned, I’d likely see the two grown men opposite Bo and I acting like perfect Claw pups.
They were not only enamored with her, but also incredibly afraid of what she’d do to them if they ever crossed her. Out of the five in our group, she was the strongest, smartest, and fiercest. Even I feared the day I failed her.
Not that I ever would if I could help it.
No doubt she’d be made Alpha of her own pack one of these days. It was anyone’s guess why she hadn’t. Probably because we needed her so much.
I needed her.
Packs replaced families, and it was only under the most important circumstances they were broken apart. If she asked to become an alpha, I would recommend her in a heartbeat. But until she wanted to lead her own pack, I’d cling onto her like a pup did their mother-wolf.
As we circled our target, Light Foot eyed the several-hundred-year-old vampire’s haunting face. I could tell with one passing glance that Ric and Dan’s agenda to nip our target’s face had taken front seat to their actual fucking jobs, and I’d need to lecture them later.
Bo crouched low behind a bush to the left of me. He was far enough away to still operate our formation properly, but still close enough that his soft voice reached me. “If those two make this more of a fight than it has to be, I’m sacrificing their shameless hides to Claire when she gets back.”
My lips rose, amused. “That makes two of us, friend.”
Unlike the stories humans told, vampires didn’t have superior hearing. Or at the very least, it didn’t compare to us werewolves. So, we didn’t have to worry about our target hearing us talk back and forth. Vampires couldn’t detect the frequency we spoke in, and it was something we took advantage of on a hunt.
Dan broke through the shrubbery first, disobeying my direct order not to, and Bo outright sighed in defeat. I had mind to do the same. Because it wasn’t even a second later when Dan’s body hit a tree hard enough to break through it, and Ric promptly rushed the vampire with his claws out.
Also against my orders, but who was counting.
Like a hissing snake, the vampire slammed his much-smaller palm into Light Foot’s chest and threw my packmate into another tree, same as Dan.
“Oh, for fuck’s sake,” I cursed before offering Bo a silent command.
Guess it was go time. So much for a quick takedown.
