$3,000 Gone in an Hour

I went to bed on 7th September without a single warning sign. No phishing site, no sketchy approval I'd signed off on half-asleep, nothing.

I woke up, checked OpenSea out of habit, and saw assets missing. My first thought was that the app was bugging out. It wasn't. My main DeFi wallet had been drained across every chain I held assets on, and eight years into using DeFi, this was the first time a private key theft had actually happened to me.

Here's what made this one different from the phishing stories I'd read a hundred times before. I had no suspicious approvals. I hadn't clicked anything fake.

If you approve an infinite spending limit on a malicious contract, you get drained on that one chain, that one asset. This hit Ethereum, Base, and Arbitrum in the same stretch, which meant the attacker didn't trick me into anything. They had the private key itself.

A phishing link steals what you clicked on. A stolen private key steals everything you ever owned on that address, all at once.

One Address, Multiple Chains, an Hour to Empty It

The attacker moved fast once they started. Within about an hour, my assets on Ethereum and Base were gone. Then Arbitrum. Then UNI sitting on Ethereum, then ETH I'd staked directly in the MetaMask pool.

They didn't stop at wallet balances either, they pulled funds I had deposited across Aave, Morpho, Relay, and Pendle.

My last legitimate transaction had been five hours before the drain started, which means whoever had the key was watching and waiting for the right moment, not acting the second they got access.

Three Times I Imported the Same Seed, and That's the Number That Haunts Me

I've gone back over this more times than I'd like to admit, trying to find the mistake. The one I keep landing on: over the years, I imported that same seed phrase three separate times, once into Trust Wallet, twice into new MetaMask installs on new devices.

Every laptop swap, every fresh install, I typed that seed back in instead of treating the original wallet as retirement-only. Whatever technique got used, whether it was browser malware, a compromised extension, or something else entirely, it was systematic enough to hit multiple wallets in a single short window.

Why I'm Not Walking Away From DeFi, Just Walking Away From Old Habits

I've thought hard about whether the risk is worth it, and honestly, it depends on what you're risking. Everything I lost came from airdrops, yield, and speculation, money I wouldn't have had at all if I hadn't taken the risk of being in DeFi in the first place.

That doesn't make losing it hurt less, but it does put it in perspective. My core holdings have always lived on hardware wallets, untouched by this.

What I'm changing is everything downstream of that: new hardware wallet, new Rabby install on a different browser, and a hard rule now that seed phrases get imported exactly once, ever, and never again after that.

I've lost money in this space before, Terra's collapse took more from me than this did, and I kept going then too. This one stings differently because it felt personal in a way market crashes don't. But eight years in, I still think the honest answer is that DeFi rewarded me more than it's taken, and the fix here isn't quitting, it's tightening the one habit that let this happen.
