A Stroll Through South Carolina's Sea Islands

My wife fell in love with the Low Country in South Carolina.

This is an area in South Carolina, along the coast, that consists of areas of the mainland and the Sea Islands. There are more than 100 barrier islands along the Atlantic coast between Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina. We spent a little time there this summer exploring those islands, and we had a lot of fun doing it.

Historically, the area was settled by Spanish colonists early on. When the slave trade picked up, antebellum aristocrats made a lot of wealth from the production of rice and indigo. Today, historical developments have led to a rich culture characterized by beautiful architecture, the arts, and some dying languages.

The South Carolina Low Country is more than a culture, however. It's also a geographic region easy to understand because to the north and west are the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. That leaves the eastern and southern parts of the state lower in elevation than the rest of the state, hence the term "low country." The geography gave birth to the region's unique culture.

Below is a YouTube video my wife and I shot of our adventure in the South Carolina Low Country. I hope you like it.
