Trail and Lens EP1: Lastoi di Formin

By Muphasas | Trail and Lens | 31 Dec 2024

This is the first blog post in which I want to tell you about my passion for the mountains and photography.
I want to start by telling you about a hike I did in July 2022.
It is a round trip on the same route, without great technical difficulty, but with breathtaking panoramic views of many of the Dolomite mountain groups.

DEPARTURE POINT: Giau Pass (2236 m)
ARRIVAL POINT: Cima ‘Ponta Lastoi de Formin’ (2657)
PATHS: 436, 435, track with rock cairns from ‘Forcella de Formin’ to the summit
PERIOD: July 2022
ELEVATION GAIN: 1100 mt.
DISTANCE: 20 km.
TIME: 6-8 hrs

The route begins at 'Passo Giau' (we are about 10 km from Cortina d'Ampezzo), where there are a refuge, restaurants and ample parking.

Leave the car here and take path number 436, following the direction to 'Forcella di Zonia' (2225 m), which can be reached in about ten minutes.

From here proceed on the flat, crossing the South-West slope of ‘Col Piombin’, following the direction to ‘Forcella de Col Piombin’ (2234 mt.). Attention is required in this section: the path is in good condition, but it is somewhat exposed and heavily trafficked.

PHOTO n.1: The mountain in the background on the left is our goal; the top can be reached in a few hours.
In the middle of the pic you can see the stretch of path that is a little exposed (it is between the two rocky bands).

Now the path proceeds without any difficulty, slightly downhill, crossing the ‘Val Cernera’, and leading to a trail junction (2195 mt.).
Up to this point the path has been all flat or slightly downhill.

Now the ascent begins: climb quickly on a path that is a little slippery, following the direction to ‘Forcella Giau’ (2357 mt.). In less than half an hour reach the pass.

The panorama opens up in an incredible way: the gentle grassy slopes of 'Mount Mondeval' and beyond them, in the background, the imposing north face of 'Mount Pelmo' (3168 mt.).

From here follow the direction to 'Forcella Ambrizzola' (2274 mt.), without reaching it. At a trail junction take path no. 435 following the direction to 'Forcella di Formin' (2463 mt.). I recommend a stop at the 'Baste Lake' and at 'the casera Mondeval de Sora' (where there is a Mesolithic archaeological site, where the Mondeval's man has been found).

Path no. 435 climbs rapidly, over somewhat landslide-prone terrain to the pass. This is enclosed between the vertical walls of the 'Croda da Lago Peak' and the large rocky slight slope which follows the direction to the 'Lastoi di Formin Peak'.
The ascent takes place in an environment that I would describe as lunar. Walk a few kilometres on this rocky slope, almost perfectly smoothened by millennia of rain, snow and wind.

This place takes your breath away.

The summit offers a breathtaking panorama on all of the mountain groups of the Ampezzo basin. You can see ‘Tofane’, ‘Cristallo’ and 'Antelao' groups (just to name a few of the most famous).

The return is along the same route as the ascent, paying attention on the descent from the two 'Forcelle' (no difficulties, but steep, landslide terrain).

I can recommend this tour to all frequenters of the Dolomites.
