The crypto ecosystem has no shortage of jargon. Ambiguous phrases, acronyms and newly formed words that had almost no meaning a decade ago (or even a few months ago for many) are now widely used market signals informing strategic investment decisions. As Cryptocurrencies are natively digital, it is important to understand the vernacular, usage, and meaning of the digital vocabulary that has formed within the space.
Whale- Large Market Participant / Holder
As humans, we often forget how much of our world is hidden. 70% of the Earth is water. This water holds 20% of life. The whale is the largest of these life forms, silently migrating to every (aquatic) corner of our planet. Whales spend most of their life in the mysterious depths of the silent unknown. They unexpectedly cross into our ecosystem for fleeting seconds at a time. Whales are at the top of the food chain and are not concerned with the predatory tactics of smaller animals in their ecosystem. Whales create entire ecosystems themselves that support other species' very existence.
In the cryptocurrency context, a whale is an individual with large asset holdings. They have significant influence over the prices and movements of a digital asset market. Many whales follow the hodl mentality and have never exchanged assets. Other whales are active trades that have the ability to single handedly influence a digital assets price in fractions of a second.
Whales are large, methodical, and stoic creatures that have disproportionate influence over an entire ecosystem. Despite their omnipresence, whales often remain out of sight and out of mind. While whales help create and build ecosystems, they can just as easily make them disappear with gasp for breath at the surface or migration to new opportunities in other ecosystems.
