Writing Poems - This Is My Way

By Agnes Laurens | Tips About Writing | 13 Aug 2021

Since one and half year I am more into writing poems than into other articles, even I have tons of ideas in my notebooks. I also have a notebook for poem ideas, plus actually writing my poems in a notebook before publishing them online. I also wrote a book with my poems I wrote on Medium.

In the first place, I didn't know where to begin writing poetry. Suddenly I got something, but I was not sure whether it was good or not. I published anyway and see what the results were. I always could learn from it. So, I did. In my view, it was terrible, but I got good response.

My structure

Here I will learn you how I did it and use this strategy for your own use.

  • Write anything that is in your mind. It could be on a towel, a small piece of paper, or just a special notebook you bought for this.
  • Start with the first sentence. Read it over. Are you happy with this? Go to the next sentence, and so on. You now have a free verse. Sometimes poetry doesn't have to rhyme.
  • When you want to rhyme, think about the last word only. Did you find a word rhyming on the last word from the previous sentence? Good. Does it fit with the sentence above? Yes? Good. You're on the right way.

I hope these tips helps you find your way of writing poetry. There are so many poetry forms out there, I still need to discover.

Good luck, poet!
