Freedom, so what is it?
Is it doing whatever you want, whenever you want? without care or regard for others or the consequences of that action?
Is it going out of the house, anytime you want, regardless of the hour, just because, you felt like it?
Is it asking, even demanding someone of something just because it is something you want? or grabbing something because its what you needed at that time without regard for its owner or its intended use?
Is it not having to discipline yourself to doing something because you're too lazy to do it and expecting not to get punished when you do something wrong or receiving any consequence for not doing what is expected? Is it not having any responsibility and being "free" to do whatever you want regardless of the outcome?
Is it really that? or is it something else entirely? How would you define freedom?
I believe our rights end with the right of the other person. I believe freedom is knowing to distinguish right from wrong and choosing to the right, because it is that, it is the right thing to do. I think real freedom comes with responsibility and the realization that real freedom is not the capacity to do what you want when you want to but being able to do what is right and just and having the happiness and contentment that what you did was for the better good not only of yourself but others as well. It is becoming aware of the circumstances you are in and realizing the limits of what you do for the sake of everyone else around you.
I heard a teenager shout at the top of his lungs, I want to be free! I want freedom!
My thought.... What freedom, freedom from what? Freedom from the discipline your parents? freedom from the conformity of the school he goes to. Freedom to go out when he wants to, regardless of how late it is. Freedom to get into vices - smoking, drinking and heck knows what else.... Is that really what freedom entails? Freedom from growing up responsibly?
I'm scared, scared because the sentiment of that one teenager is echoed by so many other teenagers... I'm afraid of what would become of this world when it becomes filled with adults who share the same thoughts.. that freedom is doing what you want, when you want, where you want. It is a scary thought for me, when we are rearing children who bears no responsibility whatsoever because they need to have their freedom.
