New Texas Abortion Law

New Texas Abortion Law

By Deejo | Thinking-Out-Loud | 2 Sep 2021

A new law went into effect in Texas today (September 1, 2021) that bans most abortions. No abortions are now permitted once there is a heartbeat detected, which is at about six weeks. This law has a different tactic from the normal attempts to ban abortions. Instead of federal prosecutions, individuals can sue anyone aiding in getting the abortion (except the mother). There does not have to be any connection to the mother or baby either.

If a plaintiff wins in court, he/she may get $10,000 or more. Texas Right to Life has even set up a website for anonymous whistleblowers to report any illegal abortion activity.

What the Texas abortion ban does

According to The Truth About the Lawsuit Against Texas Heartbeat Act article...

"The Texas Heartbeat Act utilizes only civil enforcement, affording most people the capacity to sue abortionists as well as anyone else (except for the mother) who aids or abets an abortion after a preborn child’s heartbeat is detected. Government officials do not enforce Senate Bill 8."

Pro-abortion attorneys tried to stop this in the Supreme Court before it went live but the highest court in the land remained silent allowing the law to take effect. Are the tables starting to turn? Are conservatives starting to win again? Will other states follow suit?  I personally hope so.
