Do We Need to Forgive God?

Do We Need to Forgive God?

People don’t have to do anything wrong to offend someone. Likewise, Yahweh (God) who does no wrong, can still offend people. He wants what is best for us but sometimes it’s hard to see that with our limited view and we may become angry at Him.

"‘For I know the plans that I have for you,' declares the LORD, 'plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope.'"
Jeremiah 29:11

Yahweh loves us so much He sent His son to die for us. Since He loves us this much, then He loves us enough to do what is best for us. He sees all and knows all. So we can trust that He knows what He’s doing.

"But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us."
Romans 5:8

Unforgiveness can have negative effects on our health and mental state. I believe that would include being angry at our Heavenly Father. For this reason, I believe there are times we need to forgive Him. Not because of any wrongdoing on His part, but because of our feelings.

Knowing He loves us doesn’t mean that we can’t or won't get upset with Him. I wish I could honestly say I have never been angry at Him, but I can’t. When this happened I needed to forgive Him (and ask His forgiveness) and realize that I can trust Him knowing He loves me and wants what is best for me. Again, the forgiveness is not for any wrongdoing, but for any offense that I took.

Were you ever told by a parent that you can’t go with your friends or they wouldn’t buy you something you wanted?  In saying "no" did they do anything wrong? No, but did you get angry? My guess is the answer is yes. I know I did sometimes. As children, we got angry when things didn’t go our way.

As adults, we may still get angry when hardships come or when we don’t get what we want. Yahweh is perfect and does nothing wrong, but we may get angry with Him anyway. It is painful going through hard times, however, that is when we grow. If life was all smooth sailing we would not grow as people. I believe this is one of the reasons He lets us go through rough times. I’m sure there are other reasons too. He knows what’s best. His ways are higher than our ways.

"Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials,
knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance.
And let endurance have its perfect result,
so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.
But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God,
who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him."
James 1:2-6

"For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
So are My ways higher than your ways
And My thoughts than your thoughts."
Isaiah 55:9

One thing I believe that would help us forgive Him, or not get angry in the first place is to remember that He loves us and is watching out for us even when we can’t see it.
