Can You Walk on Water?

By Deejo | Thinking-Out-Loud | 14 Nov 2023

Most people are aware that Jesus walked on water. It’s even mentioned in the movie “I, Robot”. Bridget Moynahan (as Susan Calvin) says “A robot could not commit a murder, no more than a human could walk on water.” Will Smith (as Del Spooner) replies, “Well, you know, there was this one guy a long time ago”.

Even though he didn’t mention the name, we all know who he was talking about. However, did you know Yeshua* (Jesus) was not the only one who walked on water? In the Bible, Matthew tells us that after speaking to the crowds, Yeshua told his disciples to get in a boat and go ahead of him to the other side of the sea and he went to pray by Himself. Here’s what happened next…

The boat was already a long distance from the land, battered by the waves; for the wind was contrary. And in the fourth watch of the night He came to them, walking on the sea. When the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, "It is a ghost!" And they cried out in fear. But immediately Yeshua spoke to them, saying, "Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid." Peter said to Him, "Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water." And He said, "Come!" And Peter got out of the boat, and walked on the water and came toward Yeshua. But seeing the wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, "Lord, save me!" Immediately Yeshua stretched out His hand and took hold of him, and said to him, "You of little faith, why did you doubt?" When they got into the boat, the wind stopped. And those who were in the boat worshiped Him, saying, "You are certainly God's Son!"
~ Matthew 14:24‑33

There are some interesting things about this story. First, of course, is that Yeshua was able to walk on water. Then, there was Peter walking on water. As long as Peter focused on Yeshua and believed, he succeeded. However, when he saw the storm and fear gripped him, Peter was unable to maintain the miracle of walking on water. The last miracle noted in this event was that as soon as Yeshua got into the boat, the storm subsided showing that Yeshua has the power to change the weather.

If Bible believers want to walk in the same miraculous power that Yeshua did, we need to put our focus on Him and believe. Yeshua Himself said...

“Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do, he will do also; and greater works than these he will do; because I go to the Father.
~ John 14:12

He said "he who believes in Me". He didn't say that only about those He was speaking to at the time, that also included anyone who would believe in Him in the future. That means that anyone who believes in Him today would be included.
