Bug brings SOLANA to a halt

The Solana Blockchain was down for around 4 hours yesterday. And according to the team at Solana, it was all because of a bug.

This is an alarming trend. Blockchains coming to a halt. Whether it is because of a coin dying, or it is due to a bug. It just shows you that maybe, just maybe what has been touted as this champion of decentralization is nothing more than a totem. A totem that is controlled by a man behind the curtain, just like in the Wizzard of Oz. But then again I might just be reading too deep into this whole situation.

What unfortunately is not a fairytale is the fact that on Jun 1st the Solana Blockchain came to a screeching halt. And it was halted for just over 4 hours. And this was because of a bug that was stopping Blockchain production.

Apparently, the bug was affecting the durable nonce feature in the Blockchain.

Back up and running

The Solana team worked together with the Validators of the Blockchain and was able to come up with a temporary fix to the problem. Simply turning the durable nonce feature off. This let them restart the Blockchain. The team where them working on a patch to fix the issue so that they could get it out as fast as possible.

Solana has had two big stops previous, one in September of last year when the Blockhain went down for 18 hours. And one earlier in April where some NFT bots cause the chain to crash due to transaction overload, trying to send over 6 million transactions per second.

During this downtime, the Solana price also took a hit. As it dropped more than 10%. It is now starting to slowly recover. But it still has some way to go, if it wants to get back to the level it was on before the crash.
