You Own 10 Cryptos. You Might Still Own Just One Trade.
I've done this before.
You look at your portfolio and think:
“I'm diversified. I've got BTC, ETH, a few altcoins, and some smaller projects. I'm covered.”
Then Bitcoin drops.
And somehow... everything in your portfolio drops with it. 😂
That's when you realize something:
Having 10 different coins doesn't necessarily mean you're taking 10 different bets.
The Number Doesn't Matter That Much
You can own 10, 15, even 20 different coins and still be heavily exposed to the same thing:
Crypto going up.
When the market is flying, that feels great.
When the market turns ugly, you suddenly have a lot of red candles to look at.
Different coins can behave very differently, of course. But during big market moves, a lot of them end up getting dragged in the same direction.
So instead of asking:
“How many coins do I own?”
I think a better question is:
“Why do I own each one?”
Ask Yourself One Simple Question
Before buying another coin, ask:
“Why am I buying this?”
If the answer is:
“Because it looks interesting.”
Fair enough.
“Because I like the project.”
Okay.
“Because I found a setup I want to trade.”
Makes sense.
But if the answer is basically:
“Because it might pump.”
...maybe take a second look. 😅
You don't need a 20-page investment thesis for every coin.
You just need to know what you're actually doing.
Here's My Quick Check
If I were cleaning up my own portfolio, I'd do something ridiculously simple.
Look at each coin and finish this sentence:
“I own this because...”
If you can answer it easily, great.
If you're sitting there thinking, “Umm... I don't actually remember,” that's probably worth paying attention to.
Then ask one more thing:
“If Bitcoin drops hard tomorrow, which of these coins are probably going down with it?”
That question can be surprisingly revealing.
Don't Just Collect Tickers
This is the part I wish more people talked about.
A portfolio isn't automatically diversified just because it looks busy.
You can have BTC, ETH, SOL and six different altcoins and still basically be saying:
“I think crypto is going higher.”
And there's nothing inherently wrong with that.
Just know that's the bet you're making.
Personally, I'd rather understand why I own a few things than own 20 coins simply because I was scared of missing the next pump.
Because let's be honest...
You don't need to catch every coin.
You just need to know what you're actually holding.
And sometimes, the best addition to your portfolio isn't another coin.
It's a better reason for owning the ones you already have.
