Selecting the Proper Crypto Wallet

Selecting the Proper Crypto Wallet is a critical aspect of Cryptocurrencies

Upon initial review it might appear to the lay person that each Crypto requires a separate Crypto Wallet for each coin / token they purchase. Are you wondering why all the different Crypto Wallets? You might have already mentally tabulated this approach would be a nightmare to manage and maintain your Cryptocurrencies and this would hinder further Crypto adoption.

Types of Crypto Wallets: There are several form of Crypto wallets Hot/Cold, Hard and Soft based.

Hardware wallets are the best way to store Crypto's; period!

Trezor was invented in '13 by SatoshiLabs and quickly was adopted and beat out the tried and true champion the paper wallete.

Nano Ledger was launched in '14 and

I am not going to split hairs as 100's of sites have already done those reviews.   I will say this they both store  75+ of coin types, as well as password and an array of tokens, even NFT tokens.  The interactions with software wallets has greatly improved allowing it to store more coins and token types. The downside if there is one is that you must invest a few minutes initially to setup the wallet then you are up and running.

Cold - Constructs Paper or Hardware or paper wallets. Paper, the original secure store for Cryptos Ensure you have a backup copy stored in another location

Exchange Wallets - they are free and its been proven time and again that exchanges get hacked, my recommendation would be to NOT leave your Crypto's on exchanges. Use them to buy or sell then get them in your possession ASAP, never for short nor long term storage.

I am going to add a Yubikey to my layered defense to provide secure login and transactions on Crypto Exchanges - See my Yubikey Post for greater details!

DIY Wallet Options - Relegating an old laptop of smart phone w/ the Wallet apps installed might be a good way to control access to/from Crypto wallets. Assuming they are powered off or are placed in airplane mode (SANS connectivity). Another take out this would be to pickup a Chrome book during the Holiday sales and reserve it just for Crypto Wallets; no other uses.  Keep it powered off or in airplane mode and refuse to use it for anything other than Crypto wallets.

Best Common Practices (BCP) - I like simple, yet, flexible solutions, let me explain further.  These solutions tend to be built around my standards or those I have seen others use well, they can save time and money over the long haul, they are secure by design; not an after thought.   Another aspect to consider is cost via fee's - I try to keep as much fiat and Crypto as I can, I am not one to jump. In other words I have to work it up to see if that is the best way to spend.  You pick your battles, decide what interface and what size offering you want and go forward Ensure you have a backup copy stored in another location!  Sure its a lot of work but you don't want to loose your Crypto's do you?

So, how to apply this to this specific topic? Utilize a Wallet that supports several Crypto's at once, cutting down on the number of wallets to manage.

Summary The best advice is to keep your crypto's in a safe protected place, perhaps its in paper form, and in a hardware wallet.

Enjoy the Journey
