My honest answer: yes and no.
Let me explain why."
1. Yes, AI Can Write Code
ChatGPT can generate a function. It can write a loop, a class, even a simple app.
I‘ve used it myself. It‘s impressive.
I once asked it to write a sorting algorithm, and it did — perfectly. But when I asked it to explain why it chose that algorithm, it gave a generic answer that didn't really make sense.
But here‘s the catch: AI doesn‘t understand context.
It doesn‘t know your project, your team, your business goals, or your users. It just generates text that looks like code.
2. But AI Can‘t Think Like an Engineer
Engineering is not just writing code. It‘s about:
- Understanding requirements
- Designing systems
- Making trade-offs
- Debugging unexpected issues
- Communicating with teammates
AI can‘t do any of that. Not yet. And maybe not for a long time.
3. Here‘s What‘s Actually Changing
AI won‘t replace programmers. But programmers who use AI will replace those who don‘t.
Think of it like a calculator: it didn‘t replace mathematicians. It made them faster.
Same with AI. It‘s a tool. A powerful one. But still a tool.
4. What I‘m Doing to Stay Relevant
I‘m not ignoring AI. I‘m learning to use it.
I use it to:
- Generate boilerplate code
- Brainstorm ideas
- Explain complex concepts
- Find bugs faster
But I never copy-paste blindly. I always review, understand, and adapt.
