We Eat With Our Eyes (And Our Phones)

We Eat With Our Eyes (And Our Phones)

"I went to a café last week. The food arrived, and before I could take a bite, I did what everyone does: I took out my phone and took a photo.

Why? The food wasn‘t going anywhere. It wasn‘t a special occasion. I just… wanted to.

And I‘m not alone. Scroll through any social media feed, and you‘ll see thousands of plates, cups, and desserts.

So why do we photograph our food?"

We Eat With Our Eyes First

It‘s an old saying, but it‘s true. We judge food by how it looks before we taste it.

A colourful plate, a perfect latte art, a juicy burger — they‘re designed to be photographed. And we can‘t resist.

It‘s About Memory, Not Hunger

We don‘t photograph every meal. We photograph the ones that feel special — a birthday dinner, a trip to a new city, a meal with friends.

The photo isn‘t about the food. It‘s about the moment.

Social Media Made It a Habit

Before Instagram, people didn‘t photograph food. Now it‘s automatic.

We see others doing it, we do it too. It‘s a shared ritual. A way of saying: 'I was here. I ate this. It was good.'

It‘s a Form of Creativity

A good food photo isn‘t just a snapshot. It‘s composition, lighting, colour. It‘s art.

Some people paint. Some people cook. Some people photograph their food. It‘s all creative expression.

But Sometimes It Goes Too Far

There‘s a dark side. Some people spend more time photographing food than eating it.

They miss the conversation. They miss the taste. They miss the moment.

The photo becomes more important than the experience.

The Balance

I still photograph my food sometimes. But I try to remember: the photo is for later. The taste is for now.

And now is more important.

"We photograph food because it‘s beautiful. Because it‘s temporary. Because we want to hold on to something that will be gone in minutes.

Maybe that‘s not shallow. Maybe it‘s human."
