Art Has No Purpose (Code Does)
A painting doesn‘t have to do anything. It just exists. It makes you feel something.
Code has a job. It needs to work. It needs to be fast. It needs to be reliable.
If a painting is ugly, it‘s still art. If my code is ugly, it‘s a bug.
Art Is Subjective (Code Is Not)
Art is about interpretation. One person sees something beautiful, another sees nothing at all.
Code is not subjective. It either works or it doesn‘t. It either runs or it crashes.
There‘s no 'interpretation' of a memory leak.
Beautiful Code Is Still Just Code
Yes, I can write clean code. I can use good naming, follow patterns, and structure things neatly.
That‘s not art. That‘s professionalism.
It‘s like a carpenter who makes straight cuts. It‘s not art — it‘s skill.
The Problem With Calling Code 'Art'
When we call code art, we make it about ego. We start writing code to impress others, not to solve problems.
We overcomplicate things. We try to be 'creative' when we should be clear.
I’ve seen code that was 'beautiful' and completely unmaintainable.
What Code Actually Is
Code is a tool. A language. A way to communicate instructions to a machine.
It can be well-written or badly written. It can be clear or confusing. But it‘s not art.
And that‘s fine. Art is not the only thing that matters.
"If you want to create art, go paint something. Write a poem. Play music.
If you want to build software, write code. Solve problems. Help people.
You can do both. But don‘t confuse them."
