The 1929 Wall St. Crash

The Wall St. Crash of 1929, aka the Great Crash or Black Tuesday, was the most destructive stock market crash in the United States and perhaps the entire world. On October 29, 1929, Black Tuesday, 16 million shares were sold which led to the entire market collapsing. This was due to the failing share prices, and many people decided to sell their shares on this day at once, thus causing a series of events leading to more and more people selling their shares in the companies that had not collapsed by now.

The United States' GNP fell by over 50% and all businesses and banking institutions suffered drastically. The Wall St Crash set the stage for the Great Depression, where millions of people, not only in the US but across the world lost jobs and their income, and were forced to succumb to massive debts.

The common people back then would often be inexperienced in regards to banking and finance. Many people took out loans in order to buy shares in companies. This is a mistake than no person should take, and after the crash, banks and financial institutions pulled their money bank from those they had lent it to.

However, the whilst the crash and the Great Depression affected many countries of the time including Weimar Germany and the United Kingdom, many countries were unscathed by the incident. For example, whilst the American economy suffered severely, the economies of that of the Soviet Union, a Communist one, where the free market was non existent.

There also a small few business titans such as Williams Boeing and Walter Chrysler also actually profited from the crash. Believe it or not, the companies Boeing and Chrysler probably may not have existed with out the Wall St. Crash!
