A Mother Breast feeding her childChinese scientists revealed that mother’s milk could prevent or cure Covid-19 according to an article by the South China Morning Post.

However, nutritionist Cecile Bayaga said in an email to The Science Note that this claim needs more validation and studies to be considered a cure or prevention.

“Indeed, breast milk contain antibodies that help ward off infection. This is an established fact,” Bayaga stated, “However if these antibodies work for Covid-19 needs validation.”

She noted that milk collected was from 2017,well before the pandemic and if breast milk can be considered as cure for Covid-19, numerous studies and validations must be conducted.

Also, Bagaya said, that the article in the South China Morning Post lacks the description on how the study was conducted on a certain area or topic.

“Moreover, the possible mechanism for describing their finding has not been stated, ” she adds.

Bayaga said that even if the mother or her infant is positive with Covid-19, she recommends that breastfeeding should continue and safety protocols should be implemented to decrease the transmission between mother-child.

Meanwhile, the Department of Health (DOH) is going to review the findings whenever Breast milk can prevent or cure Covid-19.
