The Tools Of My Trade

The Tools Of My Trade

Hey all
Today, it's not about silver but the tools I use to test the silver bullion I buy.

If any of you want to get into precious metal stacking, these tools are the best investment you can make with your money and time. The more you learn, the better risks you can take with potentially landing on some really good metal finds.

I have been using a scale set that I've owned for forever that I actually used for baking 😅
The issue was that it wasn't overly accurate and only measured to 1 decimal place.
I finally came across a reasonably priced scale online that goes to 2 decimal places, which is great.
The accuracy is spot on, and it's small enough to fit in my pocket.

This is what is called a pinger.

You clamp the nice shiny between the 2 black pincer nodules, and gently tap the coin with something to make it ring.

I use a piece of dowel and it's not bad. Some have fancy sticks and allsorts, you can really go to town on what you want to use.

You are listening out for different ping sounds, depending on the silver content.

It's my least used item due to hearing loss, but it has saved me a few times over the last year.

This is a digital caliper. It is used for precise measurements of objects.

Often seen in engineering professions, but they are pretty fun to measure random things with.

You clamp the object between the jaws and slide until it touches the edges. You don't want to force it, but it does need to be a snug fit around the object.

The slide is still one of my most used tools, but I do need to make a better one, though as it's so rough-looking. I do get some odd looks from the dealers/buyers around me when I whip out this little bad boy.

It is Neodymium magnets stuck on some pieces of MDF. The aim is to achieve around a 30 to 45 degree angle on the slide. Then you start the coin at the top of the slide and let it slide down.

If it sticks, then the piece ain't silver.

It will slide slowly if it is silver, and the silver content will determine just how slow it goes.

The Precious Metal Stacking Journey
The Precious Metal Stacking Journey

Time to document the Journey that I started in March 2024. Precious metals is the goal at the end of the day. I Planned to start with silver, and if I do well move into gold.
