Traditional financial tools are making crypto investing more accessible, but sadly there are people who still don't know what crypto is

I had a conversation recently that honestly shocked me. I was talking to someone, well-educated, mid-30s, working in finance — and they had never heard of Ethereum. Not that they didn’t understand it, I mean they genuinely didn’t know what it was. And it made me pause.

Because while many of us are out here discussing staking yields, NFTs, gas fees, and ETF approvals, there's a huge part of the world, even right here in Nigeria, that’s still completely outside this entire conversation.

Meanwhile, something massive is quietly happening: traditional finance is making crypto more accessible than ever. We're not just talking about people buying tokens from shady exchanges anymore. Now it's big names, companies people already trust, bringing crypto closer to regular people without all the noise and risk.

In 2024 alone, we saw Bitcoin ETFs approved in the US, meaning people can now invest in Bitcoin directly through platforms like Fidelity and BlackRock. That’s not just hype. That’s a clear signal that crypto is crossing into the mainstream. It’s not about speculation anymore, it's becoming a real financial asset class, with proper backing and structure.

Here in Nigeria, platforms like Chipper, Bundle, and even some banks are quietly integrating crypto services. You don’t need to be a blockchain developer or trade on some complicated DEX anymore. For the average person, buying and holding crypto is starting to feel a lot more like topping up your airtime.

And that matters. Because for years, crypto was gated behind too many technical barriers, seed phrases, cold wallets, chain bridges, and all kinds of jargon that made it feel like a game only tech bros could play. But today? You can buy Bitcoin with your debit card in a few taps. You can invest in Ethereum the same way you’d buy shares in GTBank.

But even with all these improvements, the sad truth is that crypto still hasn’t reached everyone. Many people in our communities still have no idea what blockchain is, let alone how it could help them escape unstable currencies, inflation, or give them access to a more open financial system.

This isn't about convincing everyone to ape into meme coins. It's about making sure people understand that they do have options, that they can save, invest, and build wealth in new ways that weren’t available just a few years ago.

And let’s be honest, Africa has more to gain from this than anywhere else. We’ve lived through broken currencies, restrictive banking systems, and high remittance costs. Crypto offers practical solutions. But it only works if people know it exists.

So yes, the tools are finally here. Investing in crypto has never been easier, safer, or more regulated. But we still have a long way to go in helping people understand why it matters.

Sometimes, accessibility isn't just about having the tools, it's about knowing the door even exists in the first place.
