A small boy named Michaelson asked his father, “Daddy, what's heavier, a pound of feathers or a pound of sand?”
His father replied, “Son, your question matters little in the mind of the wisest man. A pound is a pound in everyone's hand.”
Michaelson looked puzzled, because he knew a feather could ride on the ups and downs of the wind, but sand, a part of the land, was hard to move—especially when it hardens, and he tries to scoop it with a spoon.
When he told his dad this, his father chuckled and then said, “Hand me a bit—hold it tightly, as much as will fit.”
Little Michaelson reached down into his can and grabbed a handful of dry sand. A small gust of wind blew some of the feathers away. He then placed the sand, or what he could hold tightly in his hand, into his father's, and said, “This is all I could carry—my hands aren't as big as Daddy's hands.” The grains seeping out from between his little fingers.
Michaelson's father took the sand in his right hand and picked up a few feathers in his left. As he explained, Michaelson's eyes widened, his mind seem to expand. His father said, “While the volume is vastly different, and the weight of a few would have you confused, it is the energy with which you move these two that will matter most to the future you.”
Michaelson's father turned his palms, opening them like large bird nests. He blew into them both, pushing the air from deep within his chest.
“See, son,” he said, “while the feathers take less energy to move initially, I would have to chase down enough to fill your red winter vest. On the other hand, the sand barely moves from my right hand—more energy, but there is nothing to chase. Energy conservation.”
Michaelson asked his father, “Daddy, what's ‘conservation’?”
Michaelson's father looked at his son, laughed deeply from his belly, and said, “Run along, child. Go play in the sun. Soon it will be cold again, and on the wind, snow will come.”
His father watched as his inquisitive offspring sprang away into the rest of his day. Then he thought to himself, “That little Michaelson effectively created the energy of joy. Sometimes, I think there is an old wise man inside that little boy.”
