Dietary minerals are inorganic molecules that are essential for the human body. They are also called dietary elements.
Out of 118 chemical elements on the periodic table, 21 are essential components of our diet. Basically life is possible because of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and oxygen, these four elements being the bricks of the organic life. The remaining 17 chemical elements are known as the dietary minerals. Depending on the quan tity needed, there is a further classification into major elements (more than 5 grams present in the human body) and trace elements (less than 5 grams present in the human body).
The major elements are calcium, phosphorus, potassium, sulfur, sodium, chlorine and magnesium. The trace elements are iron, zinc, copper, manganese, molybdenum, fluoride, cobalt and iodine. There is not yet determined if boron and silicium are dietary elements or not. The remaining 100 chemical elements range from totally harmless (helium) to very toxic (polonium, plutonium). The dietary elements can be also toxic when they are taken in excess.
I need to run to work now, but i will write more tomorrow about the mineral bioavailability and food content of the minerals.
Yours truly,
George
