The term "heresy" derives from the Greek αἵρεσις, haìresis derived in turn from the verb αἱρέω which means choice, also in the sense of turning.
Those who refuse to accept what is passed off as dogma or absolute truth are heretical. The heretic is not satisfied with easy definitions or predefined schemes. It is, first of all, research. Being heretics is a way of life. It requires us to dig where they tell us there is nothing to dig, to talk when they try to silence us, to be critical of any dogmatism. Freedom, unlike power, generates a passion for public action and creative participation.
The standardization of behavior is a risk for any living being. Conformity restrains the ability to adapt. Stops evolution, leads to extinction.
Heresy generates relationships, orthodoxy destroys them. Authentic relationships are created only by entering the liberating dynamic of heresy which is "a" giving of life "not in a sacrificial sense but by emptying oneself to the point of welcoming all otherness into that void", as Enzo Mazzi writes.
Heresy is, first of all, research. Being heretics requires commitment, both in public and in private. It means exposing yourself and presenting your ideas. A heretic, in fact, is one who, more than anyone else, questions the status quo, dares to be extraordinary, is deeply committed and does not just stamp the card, because he is not afraid. In a world of highly educated sheep ready to follow the flock, the winner is the one who fails to conform.
The heretic is led to enhance heresy to the point of seeing it as an arch, as a primordial force in eternal expansion, creator of every transformation, inscribed in every atom of matter. The heretic hopes for a society founded not on opposition but on the recognition and respect of differences, on autonomy, collaboration and sharing.
Is there a way to make a change without getting burned alive at the stake? Yes, just believe it. If you believe it too then you can start thinking and acting heretically.
"In the minds of most men there are some sparks of freedom, which normally lie deep within and are covered by darkness like a spark in ashes."
John Warr

The heretic is a priest of truth and freedom, in its various manifestations, on which not only democracy but also progress is founded. Without freedom of thought, information and criticism, in a logic of constructive confrontation, democracy in science dies and a dangerous single thought asserts itself which not only does not lead to progress and does not guarantee public interest, but risks being functional to unspeakable private interests.
