The Day My World Changed

The Day My World Changed

By Jmac1773 | The Hard Fork | 23 Sep 2021

Ok. Maybe that title is a little over-the-top.  The day I'm referring to in that slightly click-bait-ish title is the day that I decided to wade into my personal kiddie pool of cryptocurrency.  The actual Day My World Changed was the day my son was born.

But that's a story for a different blog.

I had heard of crypto off and on for several years but never gave it any real credence.  The stories of Bitcoin millionaires was... intriguing... but I knew I didn't have the money to invest in something like that.  I knew that those folks probably invested millions to get back even more millions and that was a game I could not play.  If you're new to the cryptocurrency world, you're probably like me and dismissed the notion of ever having anything to do with crypto as a fun-sounding idea but not for me.  Too risky.  Too unstable.  Too hard to understand.

Those last three things are all true yet that what makes the crypto world so interesting and fun.

You heard me.  If you're anything like me, which means a little tech-savvy, interested in new things, and willing to learn - then the world of crypto can be exciting.  It can also be heartbreaking.  But never mind that.  Let's focus on the fun part.  Actually, let's get back to how I got into all of this.  I'll make it short.

My buddy and I are always looking for good means of extra income.  Usually small stuff on my end, and larger and more lucrative things on his end.  I was slowly doing more research on crypto a while back and mentioned it to him and, quite literally, the next thing I know he has a bitcoin mining operation up and running.

What??

I won't go into details, but his work situation makes that operation pretty easy.  I, however, cannot spend the money on video cards like he does so I did the next best thing as I tried to play catch-up to his operation.

I opened up a Coinbase account and started trading.  Coinbase makes it easy to buy crypto - although there are other exchanges with lower fees.  But for the beginner, it really is a good place to get started in the fascinating world of crypto.  (Be sure to use the link in the first sentence of this paragraph if you'd like to give it a try.  Thanks!)

The Better Half and I agreed that spending $10 on crypto here and there wouldn't break us so that's what I did.  Little investments on crypto that interested me or that I saw potential in.  Ok, mostly I just bought tiny amounts of Bitcoin because it was the one I knew the most about.  (I still don't even have one whole Bitcoin.  Far from it).  But at least I owned some crypto now!!

One of the best things that Coinbase does is offer free crypto.  Just watch a few slides and take some very easy quizzes and they LITERALLY GIVE YOU CRYPTO!  So far I've earned in the neighborhood of $40 or so in free crypto,  Mostly, I exchange it for crypto I actually want which is what I recommend doing.  I'll explain how in later posts but I've only ever invested $80 or so in real money and my portfolio is over $200 in three months or so.

So, it can be done.  Even with as little crypto knowledge as I have.

This post should set the tone for what I'm here for:  Small investments and smart crypto exchanges that make you a little extra money.  I'm not looking to make millions (but it would be nice) and I'm not looking to quit my day job.  In fact, I do all of my stuff in the crypto world while working full-time and raising a son.  That's what I'm here for - to help folks like me learn, earn, and have fun in the process.

NOTE:  I do NOT give financial advice nor should this be taken as such.  I sometime post affiliate links to help out and I appreciate the clicks!

New to the world of crypto and I'm determined to help others understand it better and have fun doing it!

So here's the deal: I'm a middle-aged guy who is dipping my toes in the world of crypto, NFTs, AMMs, DEX, DAPP, and all the other acronyms that I generally have little idea as to what they mean. But it's fun. That's what I want to explore in this blog. If I'm honest, this blog actually has a two-fold purpose: To learn and demystify the world of crypto for those of us over, say... 35, and to have FUN doing it. And also to make some extra money along the way.
